***POSTPONED**** Beethoven & Beyond- Three Piece Suite concert in Blackheath Sunday 22 March 2020

BANC Uncategorized Leave a Comment

This year Three Piece Suite honours the 250th birthday of Ludwig van Beethoven. In their Autumn concert Beethoven & Beyond, the established string trio of Rachel Westwood (violin) Valmai Coggins (viola) and Deborah Coogan (cello) combine his string trios and duets, adding to the mix other composers with connections to Beethoven. “Music is the mediator between the spiritual and the sensual life” he wrote, so after a tough start to the year, soothe your soul with an hour of sublime, passionate and thought-provoking selections by Haydn, Hoffmeister, Dohnanyi and of course, the birthday boy Beethoven.  Stay after the performance to meet the performers and enjoy the famous afternoon tea. One third of the proceeds will go to WIRES Blue Mountains Branch.

Rally to Save Equal Pay

JOIN IN ON: Wednesday18th March at 12:30pm

AT: The JoanTheatre,597 High St Penrith

In 2012 Australian Services Union members won 23% to 45% pay rises. The Fair Work Commission ordered that Equal Pay increases on the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Award (SCHADS Award) wages be phased in over eight years – with the final instalment in December 2020.It was a historic victory for all workers in our sector – thanks to ASU members.

Twice every year since 2012 our rates of pay in the community and disability sector have increased. Members are between $200 and $594 better off per week. But now Equal Pay is under threat. When ASU members won Equal Pay, state and federal governments set aside special funds to cover our new higher rates of pay. This guaranteed funding until December 2020.Now it’s clear that many government departments have not budgeted to lift the funding of programs into the future. We are approaching a funding cliff that would slash jobs and services.

French Bred – Three Piece Suite concert in Blackheath , Sunday March 24

In their first concert series for 2019, string trio Three Piece Suite will present a celebration of French music at Blackheath Presbyterian Church on Sunday March 24th at 4pm with a diverse selection of French born, bred and adopted composers.

Do you have any long life milk, cereal (particularly weetbix), pasta, or tinned goods that you could donate to help the people in our community who are struggling to feed themselves and their family? Donations gratefully received at our offices on Gardiner Crescent. Thank you.

Carers Support Group EOI.

BANC Uncategorized Leave a Comment

Dear friends,

BANC is looking to start up a carers support group here in our meeting room on Wednesdays. We are looking for expressions of interest from potential participants, and also for a core group of people who would like to run it. It can either be a formal or informal get together, and we have resources for both types. If this is something you would like to attend, or would like to have a say in how it’s run, please contact 4787 7770 and leave a message for Jade.

Dear friends,

A volunteer opportunity has opened up at our digital literacy service, Cyber_Shed. The Cyber_Shed introduces over-50s novices to the internet one-to-one, with a focus on social media. Cyber_Shed educates & equips people to stay connected with far-flung family, participate in the broader community & stay safe online. Cyber_Shed relies on volunteers to help with the tutoring of students, and as we have currently lost one of our long-standing tutors, a position has opened up. Please contact Jade on 47877770 if this interests you!

*Update. A wonderful woman called Bettina has volunteered her services. What a lovely community we live in. f

Dear friends,

The Blackheath District Horticultural Society turns 100 in 2020 and one of their members is writing out the history of the society by hand. Is there any lovely soul out there who would be interested in volunteering their typing skills to convert her handwritten pages to a word document? If yes, please call and leave a message for Jade at BANC on 47877770. Thank you.

Dear friends,
A lovely lady rang us here at BANC to ask if we could put out a request for any expressions of interest in a Blackheath sewing circle with a focus on connection and networking. It would be held here at the centre and everyone would be welcome, knitters, quilters, sewing types etc. It would be by gold coin donation, just to cover the room hire cost. If this sounds like something you’d enjoy doing, please call Margaret on 47876049

Head up to the Kinship at Christmas lunch held here at the community hall, corner of Great Western Highway and Gardiner crescent. Stop-Motion Animation Workshops

BANC Uncategorized Leave a Comment

The children of Mount Victoria had a wonderful time creating stop-motion animation movies recently. Under the tutelage of the fabulously talented animator, Norman Yeend, the children made movies about snowmen and train crashes, with a bit of good old fashioned toilet humour thrown in.

If you’d like your child to attend our next workshop on January 12th, 10am til 12 noon at the Blackheath Community Centre, please call Jo on 0438 099 081. This workshop is suggested for children aged 7-12 and bookings are essential.

Did you know we were one of the lucky recipients of the @SydneyWater community grants program? With Sydney Water’s support we’ve been able to implement this years festival and workshops. #sydneywater#communitygrants

New! Frozen Meals at BANC.

BANC Uncategorized Leave a Comment

Did you know we know have frozen vegetarian meals here at BANC? This is a new community project, created in response to increasing food insecurity being felt by local people. We are partnering with The Victory Cafe, Junction 142 Food Recovery, and BANC volunteers to provide nutritious meals to our community for a gold coin donation. Please share this information with your networks.

Junction 142

BANC Uncategorized Leave a Comment

“In partnership with the Uniting Church the ‘Junction 142’ project at 142 Katoomba Street now has a renovated laundry and bathroom available for use. It is incredibly difficult to function in society without access to these facilities so they are filling an important need. On top of this, we can also provide free clothing from our Op Shop to prepare people for job interviews and appointments with real estate agents.

In the past year we have provided more than 6000 free meals and food parcels as well as rescuing around 20,000 kilos of surplus food from going to landfill.

We deal with homelessness every day. Often it can be locals who just haven’t been able to make the rent or mortgage payments. Director Rosa Del Ponte says “We deal with ordinary people who struggle to manage sky rocketing housing costs. It just takes a run of bad luck and anyone can end up homeless. One partner loses a job and the other gets sick and then in a matter of months they are on the streets. We have even helped a family of five who were living in a tent in the bush”.

The Soul Kitchen also helps the Sydney homeless who are riding the trains at night to stay safe and warm. Rosa explains “They hop off at Katoomba and come to us for a meal or to have a shower and launder their clothes”.”

The month ahead looks like a lot of fun as the sister towns of Wentworth Falls, Leura, Katoomba and Blackheath in the Upper Blue Mountains exhibit a healthy dose of sister rivalry to compete to be the ‘best-dressed’ town for the inaugural 4 Sisters Yulefest – a joyous mid-winter celebration!

The Blackheath sister has already started to rebel and has no interest in being the ‘prettiest’ … true to her name BLACKheath, she’s the cool, dark and daring sister and her businesses are celebrating Blackheath’s DARK side … which is why Blackheath is a good place to go stargazing in winter! But check them out … they’ve created a ‘red light district’ to look at the issue of light pollution on wildlife, and are daring customers to go#ToplessInJuly as they tackle the plastic pollution problem of single-use plastic ‘tops’ on cups.

Check her out and check out all the other sisters as the month unfolds … they each have very different personalities!

Based in the UK, she has a focus on black minority ethnic women. Sadia organised a hugely successful event titled ‘Let’s Talk Honour’ in October 2016, which was held at Gloucester University. She talks about the importance of speaking out against religious fundamentalism and Islamist narratives regarding blasphemy and apostasy laws and other matters, insisting on the right to criticise some aspects of religion, despite the fact that views such as hers are often labelled as unacceptable, Islamophobic or offensive, and people can even be – and are – killed for such criticism.

Three Piece Suite

BANC Uncategorized Leave a Comment

Mountains regular “Three Piece Suite” returns to Blackheath Presbyterian Church on Sunday 15th October at 4pm.

The trio of Rachel Westwood (violin), Valmai Coggins (viola) and Deborah Coogan (cello) are in their fifth year of performance in Blackheath, continuing to provide the highest quality chamber music to appreciative mountain audiences.

To share the magic, the string trio celebrates the return of guest flautist James Fortune with an all-Mozart program. While sometimes rumoured to have disliked the flute, Mozart wrote his Flute Quartet in A major K 298 as a humorous and affectionate tribute to his friends. The mighty Divertimento in E flat major K 563 is the first significant piece ever written for string trio. Finally, enjoy some of the most popular tunes from the opera “The Magic Flute”, arranged in 1793 by Franz Heinrich Ehrenfried for flute and strings.

Since the last performance in March, cellist and music teacher Deborah Coogan has moved residence to beautiful Blackheath. Although she maintains a part-time presence in Sydney, the charms of mountain life have finally won her over.

After the concert, meet and mingle with the musicians over afternoon tea in the church hall.

BANC Uncategorized Leave a Comment

tps-media-photoIn their final concert series for 2016, the musicians of string trio Three Piece Suite invite you to explore with them music of the Celtic Nations – Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Brittany.
